k. now we start afresh. first sun n netskape released something called JavaScript. n coz mikrosoft is an expert at kloning it introduced a 'roughly' compatible language kalled JScript. later JavaScript was submitted for standardization n thus it bekame ECMAScript. n now browsers are trying to bring in diversity in supporting different versions of ECMAScript either fully or partially.

Gekko n KHTML based browsers use JavaScript (ECMAScript-262 rev3) (mozilla n firefox klaim to partially support JavaScript 1.6)
IE uses JScript (ECMAScript-262 rev3)
Opera allows for ECMAScript-262 rev3 with both JavaScript n Jscript extensions

LazloMail - Stumbling Blok

as i pointed out in one of my prev posts, lazlomail is fast n pretty easy to use. there seems to be one major stumbling blok though. the klient neither renders html by default nor provides for an option to do so. kummon growUp. most of the eMails i reccieve are html based. at first i thought this was a flash problem. mabbe html rendering was a no-no as that would require flash to replikate part of wht the browser also does. but a quik search lead me to this which left me wondering as in why they have not implemented html rendering ??

GroovY vs RubY {Closures}

I was looking at Groovy closures and i was just wondering how easy it would be to implement the same example in ruby. and this is what i came up with

Unfortunately, it turned out to be a lot more skarier than i thought it would be.
make no mistake though, klosures ARE implemented equally, if not more, gracefully in ruby. the problem in this partikular kase is the fakt that [] and []= are methods in ruby. also note, i kant use each instead of each_index, as each does not synk the values of each individual array element bak to the original kopies. i think there should be an each! method. so now, since []= is a method i kannot kall [i]= direktly. i have to use the indirekt route of treating it as a setMethod(index, setValue)

Need to connect any service to another service on the Web (or anywhere else)? Trying to mash together data? Building supply chains? There is generally no need to ever ask anyone to stand up a new web service. Pull everything you need via its RSS feed. Some software developers will disagree with this and say there are better methods, but to this I point out: 1) RSS is robust enough that it's all you'll ever need nine times out of ten and 2) it's what you're going to offered automatically anyway, take it and get something done.

RSS creates the Web 2.0 information ecosystem by enabling interconnectedness, network effects, emergent behavior, and much more as well. And RSS doesn't demand control of the other end of the conversation. This is a big enabler all by itself and is a classic Web 2.0 force. By letting consumers of RSS use any tool or service they want on their side, barriers are eliminated and connectivity is encouraged.

It's worth noting here a major difference between Ruby and most other languages. In (say) Java, you'd find the absolute value of some number by calling a separate function and passing in that number. You might write

number = Math.abs(number) // Java code

In Ruby, the ability to determine an absolute value is built into numbers---they take care of the details internally. You simply send the message abs to a number object and let it do the work.

number = number.abs

this is intresting. the point here is that one cannot exklusively define all operations possible on the class number. what if tomm theres a new formatting option out. i think that the java filosofy was to have Math.xxx methods for funktionalities on the number klass that number should not be aware of. this is a design issue. it is always safer to have objekts handle operations on self on their own. on the other hand, having a kommon klass for simple operations as deskribed above might lead to a smaller memory map.

Stephen Spencer has an xcellant post on how the best search engines still donot support RSS search. as per his observations none of the top 4 (google, yahoo, msn, askJeeves) live upto the mark (kaching, indexing, non-linked keyword searching, etc.), mikrosoft being the furtherest down the line.

Wikis are now forging into yet another business. publikations. in a much hyped move LA Times have introduced wikis for social publishing. i must agree that without a strukture for an artikle it would be diffikult to involve people into putting there heart n souls to do the requisite for the wiki to bekome a wiki persay. wikis kan more or less do well as a subbing job (rechekin on faktual citations, spellings n stuff like that)

as per my experience. there are 2 kinds of blogs.

the first are the weB-LOGS. the personal pages of hundreds n thousands of teen aged gurls updating her friends about new happenings in life.
the sekond n more important ones are the blogs. supposedly the veteran among the new generation of social s/ws. with korportes taking to blogging in a big way n publishing blog guidelines it is about time to start talking about blog mining. however the relevant question is whether such mining kan really do the job.

text miming has really not delivered the promised goods n i doubt the same blog mining would yield the same results.

teknikally, a perfekt universal translator is impossible. this is bekause of teh difference in the richness of the various different languages. having said that, here is someone bent on doing the impossible. at the google faktory tour they unvieled the google translator. auto-translation b/w various languages is undoubtedly a tough job. whats intresting is

This is the Rosetta Stone approach of translation. Let’s take a simple example: if a book is titled “Thus Spoke Zarathustra” in English, and the German title is “Also sprach Zarathustra”, the system can begin to understand that “thus spoke” can be translated with “also sprach”. (This approach would even work for metaphors – surely, Google researchers will take the longest available phrase which has high statistical matches across different works.) All it needs is someone to feed the system the two books and to teach it the two are translations from language A to language B, and the translator can create what Franz Och called a “language model.” I suspect it’s crucial that the body of text is immensely large, or else the system in its task of translating would stumble upon too many unlearned phrases. Google used the United Nations Documents to train their machine, and all in all fed 200 billion words. This is brute force AI, if you want – it works on statistical learning theory only and has not much real “understanding” of anything but patterns.

the brute AI approach had its diffikulties in finding training korpuses large enough required for kommercial quality results. but as ever(first with search, then gMail) GooGle changes the bottleneks.

well, the news is that some shit head (Schwartau - supposedly a national level sekurity expert) switched all his office komps frm Pcs to Maks. what is more intresting part is the direkt konciquence.

The Macintosh community, always on the lookout for good news about Apple Computer and its products, started a flood of reaction. Schwartau's blog tracked 9,000 visitors Wednesday, 40,000 Thursday and 12,000 by midafternoon Friday. In a month, it usually gets 4,000 visitors.

61K visitors in 3 days!!! GoD!! i remmember being satisfied with 8 regular visitors a day (my prev blog. i better not talk about this one). i need help.

Fullfilling (optimistikally) his (Bill Gates) promise of better Human Komputer Interfacing, Mikrosoft has announced six new fonts to be available in 2006. all the respektive font designers seem to be going ga-ga over there kreations being warm, friendly, robust, sturdy, workhouse, informal, flexible, versatile, less cuddly, more assertive n what not (yeah we`re still talking about fints here). n yeah, although i might not be the right one to komment here, failing to understant or extrapolate the difference b/w serif n sans serif type fonts, as an end user atleast i fail to see the difference. n if ur still intrested. read more here.
